As coffee prices rise, Nestlé ramps up a $100 million expansion at its Tri An factory in Vietnam.
Global coffee prices remain elevated, and although Vietnam, as a key producing region, has seen its domestic green coffee quotes retreat slightly from earlier highs, they remain at relatively high levels. Meanwhile, Vietnam's coffee exports in 2023 showed a trend of lower volumes but higher values, with total export value hitting a record high. In response to growing market demand, Nestlé announced an additional US$100 million investment in its Tri An coffee factory in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam, to expand production capacity. Behind this decision are both expectations of a recovery in coffee consumption demand and supply-side disruptions driven by weather factors and the Red Sea shipping crisis. This article will review recent coffee price trends, Vietnam's export data, Nestlé's layout in Vietnam, and the multiple factors affecting market supply and demand. [more…]

Vietnam's coffee-growing regions hit with level-2 drought warning, robusta output drop may continue to push up international coffee prices
Recently, prices for both Arabica and Robusta coffee in the international market have been on the rise. The main driver behind this is that Vietnam, the world's second-largest coffee producer, is experiencing a severe drought, causing Robusta coffee output to decline and global inventories to tighten accordingly. Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued a level-2 drought warning for five provinces—Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, Binh Thuan, Phu Yen, and Gia Lai—and warned of possible natural disasters. Rainfall in the central and Central Highlands regions has been significantly lower than in previous years during the same period, with water levels in many rivers dropping to historic lows. The Mekong River's water level has even broken its lowest record since 1926. The combination of drought and salinization has caused coffee trees in the flowering stage to wither and develop yellow leaves, and output in some producing areas may drop by as much as 30% to 50%. Local coffee purchase prices have soared to 120 million Vietnamese dong per ton, an annual increase of 250%, putting pressure on traders' cash flows. This article will review the development of the drought, production forecasts, and price trends, and also examine how brands such as Front Street Coffee are responding amid raw material fluctuations. Vietnam Hit by Successive Tropical Storms, Port Congestion Worsens Coffee Export Woes
Central Vietnam was hit by two consecutive tropical storms in September, causing casualties and severe damage to infrastructure. Although the main coffee-growing regions were not directly affected, heavy rainfall has clouded the harvest outlook. More critically, major export hubs such as Haiphong Port and Da Nang were paralyzed by the storms, leaving large numbers of shipping containers backed up and severely disrupting coffee exports. Combined with reduced output caused by drought earlier in the year and steadily climbing domestic spot prices, the supply difficulties facing Vietnam—the world's second-largest coffee producer—are driving up international robusta futures prices. Front Street Coffee continues to monitor developments in the producing regions. [more…]

Extreme Weather and Pest Infestation Deal a Double Blow: Vietnam's Coffee Production May Continue to Decline
The World Meteorological Organization recently issued a warning that frequent extreme weather is severely impacting Asia. China, Dubai, and other places have been hit by torrential rains and floods, while South Asian countries such as Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Indonesia are mired in scorching heat, with temperatures in many areas exceeding 45°C. As a major global coffee-producing region, Vietnam's Robusta coffee is facing a double assault of drought and pests—reservoirs have dried up, irrigation water sources have been depleted, and cotton bollworms are spreading rapidly. Coffee farmers are being forced to increase irrigation frequency, yet have no water to use. Although rain is expected in May to ease the drought, the latest data from the International Coffee Organization show that global coffee exports grew 8.1% in March 2024, while coffee futures prices have continued to decline, creating a subtle contrast between production prospects and market trends. Sri Lanka's Geographical Neighbors and the History of Ceylon Black Tea: A Century-Old Tea Journey from Taylor's Trial Planting to Front Street Coffee's Pour-Over
Sri Lanka is an island nation in South Asia, separated from India by the Palk Strait, with the closest point only about 30 kilometers away. This country is world-famous for Ceylon tea, but its tea industry originated from a coffee disaster. In 1867, Scotsman James Taylor planted 19 acres of tea seedlings at the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy, thus beginning a legend. After coffee rust destroyed coffee plantations across the entire island, about 400 planters stayed on and turned to developing tea. Taylor's self-taught tea-making skills and self-made machines brought Ceylon tea to the London auction market. Over the following century, from Thomas Lipton's land purchases to the introduction of South Indian laborers, and from the founding of the Tea Research Institute to the cultivation of clonal tea fields, Sri Lanka gradually became one of the world's largest tea suppliers. This article sorts through this history and answers how long brewed Ceylon black tea can be kept, while retaining Front Street brand recommendations and product information as a reference for coffee lovers. Many tea houses in Ipoh have long purchased its coffee powder to make white coffee. However, as the third-generation operators grew older and manpower became scarce, and the fourth generation each had their own careers and no intention of taking over, the family finally decided to cease operations. After the news spread, longtime customers rushed to stock up as mementos, with some even traveling dozens of kilometers just to taste the flavor remembered from years past. This old factory bearing the elephant trademark, after completing its final batch of orders, will officially pass into history. [more…]

Late-night coffee aroma wafts through Shanghai, sparking heated discussion; multiple departments respond it's not a factory incident, tracing the source
In the early hours of May 17, 2021, residents in several districts of Shanghai reported on Weibo that a rich coffee aroma was drifting through the air. Some thought a neighbor was brewing coffee, while others suspected a family member was secretly drinking coffee late at night. This mysterious scent smelled like instant coffee, mixed with burnt and sesame oil notes. Subsequently, rumors spread online that a flavoring factory in Minhang District had experienced a gas leak, with speculation that the leaked substance was furfuryl mercaptan. Shanghai's fire and ecological environment departments responded that they had not received any reports of related accidents and had launched an investigation, but no abnormalities were found at the scene, and the source is still under verification. Harbin Pharmaceutical Factory No.6's viral coffee accused of violations: oral liquid in latte sparks safety controversy, blue bottle drinks removed from shelves
During the May Day holiday, the former site of Harbin Pharmaceutical Group's No. 6 Factory, known as Harbin's "Northeast Louvre," became a popular photo spot. A coffee shop opened in its first-floor lobby launched two distinctive drinks — pairing Harbin Pharmaceutical Group's iconic small blue-bottle oral liquid with coffee to create a Blue Bottle Latte containing calcium gluconate and a Zinc Wish Latte containing zinc gluconate. However, this creative idea sparked consumer concerns about medication safety: the oral liquid's instructions explicitly warn against taking it with milk or caffeine, and both products are Class A over-the-counter drugs, not substances that can be used as both food and medicine. Under China's Food Safety Law, drugs may not be added to food, and the coffee shop's preparation method may violate regulations. Currently, the blue-bottle coffee has been taken off the menu, though it remains unclear whether this is a temporary sellout or a permanent discontinuation. [more…]
